Mar 19, Minutes. It’s warm and dry. When I’ve been unable to read, at various times in my life, I’ve always found my way back to reading, and to life, through her books. But in my opinion, Lamott should have just stuck to examples of her chosen prayers that don’t make her look like a co-opting upper-middle-class gentile white lady.
It is these three prayers — asking for assistance from a higher power, appreciating what we have that is good, and feeling awe at the world around us — that can get us through the day and can show us the way forward. Lamott has a new book out called Help, Thanks, Wow: I first rea I think a lot of readers of this book will have the same initial feeling I did once I held it in my hands, which is ” The rot smells faintly of grapes, of fermentation, of one element being changed alchemically into another, and the air is moist and you sleep under two down comforters in a cold room.
I stumbled across it on the What’s New shelf at the library and finished it quickly. Lamott is so frank about sharing her brokenness, all the fragments of her crazy hippie life, that we hope we too–if we had half her courage–could reap the rewards of prayer at least as bountifully as she.

It unfolds, and you experience it, and it is so horrible and endless that you could almost give up a dozen times. Not to mention the fact that this meant the game was now going to drag on even longer and I had important things to do.
Pain and love, all at once. It’s a lovely book, even though it’s short and I wish there were more of it. Then something comes up, and I overreact and blame and sulk, and it feels like I haven’t made any progress at all.
It is a short, gift-type book. Lamitt you love her and are going to read anything she writes. Wonder takes our breath away, and makes room for new breath. In this regard, I am a wordy minimalist. Bodies and souls are fed.
