She assists the fire-lizard queen in relocating her clutch to safety from Thread, thereby winning the creature’s trust. But her music calls to her incessantly and she can’t contain herself completely.

That makes for an interesting read. Menolly provides us not only a more immediate perspective, but also an extremely different, and far more human view of Pern, and what life in a hold, especially such a conservative one as Half Circle might be like.

Finally, her talents are recognized by kindly people who whisk her away on dragon-back to a new community of people who can value her for the reasons she values herself. Not so much in the first half, since I found the presentation of the Half-Circle Hold folk ham-handed and unconvincing. Where previously the Pern series had followed a wider perspective, skipping around many meetings and featuring a lot of byplay between characters some of whom got lost in the mixDragonsong is a far more focused story. I’m not a fan of the over emergence of vampires, fairies and angels. She’s forbidden to play instruments or sing, and then dragonsojg accident wounds her hand badly.
Eventually, those around her that care and befriend her draw her out from her harden shell and she eventually finds herself a student in the Harper Hall. She fed my tomboy fantasies by living rough, making her own shelter, killing and skinning a large bird, and taming wild animals.
