For an introductory text concerning such a huge region and time period, it did a remarkable job of pointing out that nothing happened everywhere, and showing just enough information about what was going on in places that didn’t follow the pattern and with everyday people and women that it firmly situated itself as an introductory text, which made me want to learn more.
